RPG Sales Up - 4e Fends of Pathfinder for Top Spot

ICv2 reports that in the fourth quarter of 2010 hobby game sales were up 10%. This includes board games, collectible card games, miniatures, and roleplaying games. Amazingly, sales were up in all categories, including RPGs. This is great news!

Despite earlier indications that Pathfinder might be outselling D&D 4e, it appears that 4e has fended of its competitor to remain the top-selling RPG, as reported HERE :

Top 5 Roleplaying Games – Q4 2010

I'm glad that interest in tabletop gaming seems to be growing, even if just a little. Despite all the doom and gloom predictions that came with Hasbro's recent announcement of cutbacks in it D&D line, it appears that 4e is still going strong!

  1. Isn't that all the 4e people buying the Essentials line? So not necessarily a lot of new D&Ders.

I'm afraid that's top secret information, sir.

  3. Well, if it is, nobody else can buy them, or so I am told. According to my local friendly games store owner, they have gone out of print.

  4. Are the Castle Ravenloft and Wrath of Ashardalon Board Games being included under "Dungeons & Dragons"?

I don't know for sure, but I suspect not. I do know, for instance, that the D&D miniatures were put in a different category. CR and WoA should clearly be considered as stand-alone boardgames.

  6. Also, someone pointed out on Greyhawk Grognard that those stats are based on selected retailers' subjective impressions, and may not have ever fully reflected actual sales through all channels.

  8. Yeah, I think somebody is fudging the numbers. I look at this everyday:

And its been that way for months now. Only the Red Box hung onto #1 for a bit.

Hell, look at the top 10.

  9. IMO, I wouldn't be surprised if catalog size is very important. WotC has more product in their D&D brand line than Pathfinder has.
