Early Timeline of OSR Blogging

A cursory browsing of blogs reveals the first appearances of old-school gameblogging before 2009:

Feb 2004 - Jeff's Gameblog
Feb 2005 - Mythmere's Musings
Mar 2007 - Delta's D&D Hotspot
May 2007 - Adventures in Gaming
Jan 2008 - The Schizonomicon (became Grognardia)
Feb 2008 - Sham's Grog n' Blog
Mar 2008 - How to Start a Revolution in 21 Days or Less (blog dates back to 2006)
Mar 2008 - Strange Magic

<- DEATH OF GYGAX ->

Apr 2008 - Alex Schroeder's Wiki
May 2008 - LotFP: RPG
May 2008 - The Tao of D&D
June 2008 - Chgowiz's Old Guy RPG Blog
July 2008 - Sword +1
Aug 2008 - The Society of Torch, Pole, and Rope
Sep 2008 - Back in '81
Oct 2008 - Bat in the Attic
Oct 2008 - Uhluht'c Awakens
Dec 2008 - A Rust Monster Ate My Sword
Dec 2008 - Troll and Flame
Dec 2008 - The Other Side

Let me know if you can think of any other pre-2009 old school gameblogs.

I don't know why I am compelled to undertake these tedious blogometric exercises. I think it reflects some sort of personality disorder I have.

  1. I started my game site in August 2007. I switched it over to blog format later that year but mostly posted about boardgames and stuff (which I've since taken offline to keep things more focused on RPGs). I refocused on old school D&D in March 2008.

  2. Cyclopeatron, if it's a disorder, at least it's an interesting one. :)

  3. I refocused on old school D&D in March 2008.

  4. I started mine as a horror blog in 2007 but switched focus in Dec (on the Solstice no less) of 2008.

  5. It's definitely interesting. I think we all like looking back like this, trying to make sense of a personal experience, understand it. We're essentially a backward-looking community, and it's natural that we retreat to the basics at a time of change, with blogs shutting down and the energy moving in new directions, out to G+. Maybe this is a natural end, or a transfer into one or more new things.

  7. FWIW, I started my original Adventures in Gaming blog on Blogspot on May 10, 2007.

  8. Matt Finch had a short-lived blog in 2005 called Mythmere’s Musings. It was C&C focused but makes interesting reading given how the history of our scene has unfolded.

  10. Your doing this stuff actually keeps me from doing it, so it's enormously appreciated. :-)

  11. I found this interesting since I didn't start following any blogs regularly until this year. Thanks for the effort!

  12. I created my blog in June 2008 so I could reserve the name.
But I didn't actually start blogging until about four months ago.
Does that count for anything? LOL

  13. I consider David Larkin's RPG Corner to be old school. His first post is January 2006:

  14. I believe Scott Driver's OD&D Wilderlands blog was up in 2008. It's now defunct though.

It was the first OSD&D blog I read.
